Faro Arrivals

The Algarve is a favourite holiday destination for many British and European visitors, and Faro Airport is therefore at its busiest during the summer. The airport has a wide range of facilities for arriving and departing passengers, and is served by a number of airline companies. Passengers arriving at Faro Airport will also find it easy to reach their next destination, via public transport or by road.

Faro Airport is served by a number of low-cost airline carriers, of which Ryanair offers the majority of routes from the airport. The airport has recently become a hub for Ryanair, in 2010, when the airline carrier introduced 31 new routes and seven aircraft to the airport’s services. Over 1.7 million passengers per year will now travel to and from Faro Airport on Ryanair aircraft. Flights arrive with this airline carrier from Bremen, Bristol, Hahn, Leeds/Bradford, Liverpool, London-Stansted and Porto. Additional low-cost airline carriers at Faro Airport include Easyjet, Jet2.com, Thomson Airways, Thomas Cook Airlines, Monarch, Germanwings and Berlin Air, while other airline companies include Lufthansa, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Brussels Airlines, Flybe, Bmibaby and Luxair.

Passengers will arrive on the ground floor of Faro Airport, which consists of just a single terminal building. Departures are handled from the upper floor, but check-in processes are also handled from the ground floor. Faro Airport currently handles over five million passengers per year, and has the capacity for six million per annum. Since that the airport is now reaching its full capacity, development plans are already underway. The airport’s plans will extend, renovate and modernize the existing terminal building and commercial areas, improve the runway facilities and expand the car parking areas. By 2013, it is planned for Faro Airport to be able to accommodate up to eight million passengers per year.

Once your flight has landed you may need to proceed through passport control if you are travelling from a foreign country, or Customs, should you have any items to declare. Nowadays, airports and authorities are finding new ways to ease passport control processes, making them quicker and easier for passengers and airport staff alike. For example, passengers can acquire an electronic passport, which incorporates their face image, fingerprints and signature. The electronic passport is personally used at the specific Control Boxes, and is an automatic system, allowing passengers to bypass long queues in Passport Control. Once passengers are ready to collect their luggage, they can proceed to the baggage reclaim area, and find the carousel that is being used for their flight.

If there is some time to spare at the airport, there are numerous interesting shopping outlets on the landside of the terminal, as well as some nice restaurants and snack bars. Passengers will also find banking and currency exchange services, postal services, baby changing rooms and lost property offices within the terminal. Faro Airport is accessible for disabled passengers, with lifts and ramps to support movement to higher/lower areas of the building, adapted toilet facilities on the air and landside of the terminal and there are reserved parking spaces available. Passengers who require further assistance upon arrival at the airport can confirm their requirements with their airline company, in advance of the departing flight to Faro Airport. Staff members will then be on hand to provide assistance with passport control procedures and the collecting of luggage items.

There are a number of quality car hire companies with rental counters in the arrival area of Faro Airport. A rented car is one of the most popular ways to explore Algarve region, as buses or trains cannot easily access many areas. There are some wonderfully intriguing towns nearby Faro that are very easy to get to by motorcar. It is also easier to travel to and from the beaches in your own rented car. Some of the car hire companies at Faro Airport are Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Alamo, Sixt and Europcar. These companies are all internationally known brand names, and offer their customers competitive prices and a wide range of vehicles for hire. Bus and taxi services are also available from outside the arrivals area of the airport. Public buses run to the main bus terminal in the centre of Faro, and the Aerobus is an additional bus service provided during the summer. Although there is no train service at the airport, the bus terminal in Faro is nearby the train station. Taxis are waiting in the taxi rank at the airport.

Passengers arriving at Faro Airport can make enquiries at the information desk located at the meeting point in the arrivals area.
