Car Hire Faro Airport

The airport of Faro leads to the Algarve region of Portugal, which is very popular for tourists, as it features some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and a number of intriguing towns. Faro Airport is an ideal arrival point at which to explore these areas, and many passengers rent a car from the airport for transport. There are numerous car hire companies at Faro Airport, all offering competitive prices and a wide range of quality vehicles.

Faro Airport car hire companies are located within the arrival area of the terminal building. There is just one terminal at the airport, handling departures from the upper level and check-in processes and arrivals from the ground floor. Passengers arriving at the airport will easily find the rental counters of the various car hire companies, which include Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Alamo, Europcar and Sixt. These are all internationally recognized car rental brands, found at thousands of locations worldwide. Hertz is the longest standing car hire company in the world, with over ninety years of experience in the industry, while the others have been established for between thirty and fifty years.

Once you have selected your car rental company of choice, it is easy to arrange a vehicle directly from the company’s rental counters at Faro Airport, or online, from their website. The airport is however very busy during the summer months of Portugal, and it is therefore advisable to make an advanced reservation during this time, in particular if you require a vehicle of unusual style or size. The vehicles at most of the car hire companies are rented by car category, rather than by their specific makes and models, although certain companies may have options whereby cars can be more specifically booked. Hertz and Budget are two examples, and offer a number of vehicles reserved by make and model. This option is ideal for customers who like to know exactly which type of car they will be driving.

Additional items of equipment should also be reserved as early as possible, as they are usually subject to availability, on a ‘first come first serve’ basis. Customers are able to hire baby and booster seats from most car hire companies, as well as satellite navigation systems. There may even be hand controls at the Faro Airport rental location, for drivers with a lower limb deficiency. Hand controls operate the accelerator and brake pedals of certain automatic vehicles, but not the blinkers, car lights, windshield wipers or any other feature of the vehicle, such as cruise control. The equipment may also include a steering wheel knob for the driver’s assistance. Hand controls, Faro Airport, should be reserved at least 48 hours in advance of the vehicle collection time. Another popular option selected by many customers is a one way car rental. A one way car hire deal is when the vehicle is collected from Faro Airport but returned to a different location. Although hand controls may be free of charge, additional fees may be applicable for one way hires, as well as additional items of equipment hired.

All the Faro Airport car rental companies offer a good selection of high quality vehicles. More popular smaller sized vehicles with excellent rental rates and ideal for driving in the city may be similar to the Toyota Aygo, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza, while vehicles in the mid-size range include the VW Golf, Ford Fusion and Renault Laguna. Luxury and Premium vehicles may also be available, as well as larger vehicles seating seven or nine passengers. Business renters will find the Mercedes E Class and Mercedes C220 ideal for prestigious corporate events, while groups of travellers or larger families may be interested in hiring the Seat Alhambra, Mercedes Vito or Volkswagen Transporter.

A rented car is by far the best and most convenient form of transport in which to enjoy the spectacular Algarve region, but passengers arriving at Faro Airport should ensure that they meet the requirements of their selected car hire company. In general, the primary renter should be at least 21 years of age, and have a valid drivers license from his/her country of residence. The license must also have been held for at least a year prior to the rental date. In some cases, an International Driving Permit may be required. Although the age requirement of 21 applies to the majority of car categories, younger drivers may not hire certain vehicles. Persons under the age of 25 also add a young drivers fee to rentals. A major credit card such as American Express, MasterCard, Visa or Diner’s Club must be available in the primary renter’s name in order to pay for the car hire period, and customers should provide adequate insurance for their rented cars.

Faro Airport is well connected to Portugal’s road network, as it is nearby the N125 which runs the length of the coastline, as well as the A22 toll free highway leading to all areas in Algarve, and directly to Lisbon and Spain. Cars are driven on the right hand side of the road in this country, and all road rules and speed limits should be strictly obeyed. The speed limits in Faro are as follows:  120 km/h or 75 mph on motorways and highways, 90 km/h or 55 mph on open roads and 50 km/h or 30 mph in urban areas.
